LARC

Leicestershire and Rutland Carvings Project

There are 300+ churches in Leicestershire with figural carvings – some with only a few and some with many. Churches with many carvings have mostly now been photographed by Project Gargoyle and the archive currently comprises at least 6,000 images from over 130 churches.

It was recognised that this archive is a huge resource for academics from several disciplines as well as for interested amateurs and local historians both locally and nationally. It is the first time in the UK that a project has recorded all the medieval figural carvings in one area so it was decided to develop a database to hold these images and to catalogue them so that they could be researched. The LARC image database is currently being tested. However we are now recruiting volunteers with a computer who can work from home cataloguing the images.
